PRODUCT PROPERTIES
PLA, or polylactic acid, is a thermoplastic monomer that comes from organic, renewable sources like sugar cane or maize starch. Production of PLA differs from that of conventional plastics, which are made by distilling and polymerizing petroleum using fossil fuels. Instead, PLA is made using biomass resources.
The same machinery used to create petrochemical plastics may also be used to produce PLA, making the manufacturing processes for PLA very inexpensive even with the changes in raw materials. After thermoplastic starch, PLA is the second most produced bioplastic. It is biodegradable and shares traits with polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polystyrene (PS).
